Pura Agung Besakih is located on the slopes of Mount Agung (Giri Toh Langkir), in Manik Mas Village, Rendang District, Karangasem Regency. It is a complex of buildings symbolizing the unity of the Balinese Hindu community. The physical presence of the temple is not only interpreted as the largest place of worship for Hindus in Bali and Indonesia, but it is also closely associated with Mount Agung, which is believed to possess spiritual power that must be revered and preserved by the Balinese Hindu community. The Sacred Area of Pura Agung Besakih is a holy site in Bali that holds unique customs and culture based on the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which means the three relationships that create harmony in life: the balanced relationship between humans and God (Parhyangan), humans and fellow humans (Pawongan), and humans and their natural environment (Palemahan). According to the Lontar Padma Bhuwana, Pura Besakih is referred to as Huluning Bali Rajya, which means Pura Besakih is the source or origin of the Balinese realm. In other words, Pura Besakih is considered the soul of the island of Bali. This aligns with its location in the northeast of Bali — the direction of the mountains and the sunrise, both of which symbolize life.
